Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel announced that the agency has cleared a backlog of DNA samples that had awaited processing. The director stated that 1.81 million DNA samples have been processed by the FBI Laboratory Division (LD) since August 2024.
Director Patel explained, “We are statutorily required under the ‘DNA Fingerprint Act of 2005’ to receive and process collected DNA samples from federally convicted offenders, arrestees, and non-U.S. citizen detainees.” He stated the backlog of samples was not only a procedural delay, but a violation of that federal law.
Director Patel said that the agency allocated extra resources to expedite DNA processing and keep up with the continued influx of approximately 50,000 new samples being sent each month. He also stated that the reduction of the FBI’s backlog “truly helps solve crimes across the country, including unsolved homicides, mass shootings, sexual assaults, and other violent crimes.”
